Work From Home Morning Routine: How to Start on Time Without a Commute

Short answer

A good work from home morning routine replaces the commute: a short walk or daylight break, a few minutes of planning the day, and a fixed start ritual at your desk that ends with your first task started. Ten minutes is enough if you do it at the same time every workday.

What the commute was doing for you

Nobody misses traffic. But the trip to work did a quiet job: it moved you from home mode to work mode. Researchers who studied commuters found that people who used the trip to think about their upcoming workday were less affected by long commutes and more satisfied with their jobs. They called it role-clarifying prospection (Jachimowicz et al., 2021). Working from home, that switch is gone. You go from bed to laptop in thirty seconds, and the day starts in your inbox.

A 10-minute fake commute

Rebuild the useful part of the commute, without the train:

  1. Get out of the house for 5 minutes. A walk around the block, coffee on the balcony, anything with daylight. The point is a clear border between home and work.
  2. Plan on the way back, 3 minutes. Ask one question: what would make today a good workday? Pick that task and the time you will start it.
  3. Sit down and start, 2 minutes. Open the file for that task before you open email or chat. The first two minutes of real work are your arrival at the office.

If you cannot leave the house, keep the shape: daylight by a window, the plan on paper, the first task before messages.

Keep the phone out of the first 10 minutes

Without a commute, the phone fills the gap. In a Reviews.org survey of 1,000 U.S. adults, 84% said they reach for their phone within 10 minutes of waking up. Leave it charging in another room until your first task is started. More ideas are in how to stop checking your phone first thing in the morning.

Set a start time and a stop time

An office gave you both. At home, decide them. Pick a start time you can hit most days, say 9:00, and do your 10 minutes right before it. Do the same at the end of the day: a short walk or a written list of tomorrow's first task, so tomorrow's morning is already half done.

Copy this routine

  • 5 minutes outside or in daylight
  • 3 minutes: one task that makes today good, and its start time
  • 2 minutes: open that task before email
  • Phone in another room until then
