How Long Should a Morning Routine Be? Why 10 Minutes Beats an Hour

Short answer
For most people who work from home, a morning routine should take about 10 to 20 minutes. That is long enough to drink water, get daylight, plan the day and start the first task, and short enough to finish on a bad day. A routine you finish every morning beats a longer one you skip.
An hour-long routine works on good days. The problem is the other days: a late night, an early meeting, a sick kid. When the routine does not fit, people skip it entirely, and skipping is how a habit ends.
Habits are built by repetition, not by length. In one study it took a median of 66 days of repeating a daily behavior before it felt automatic, and missing a single day did not meaningfully slow people down (Lally et al., 2010). A routine you can repeat every workday wins over one you can only do on weekends.
Not in one morning, whatever the videos promise. What changes is slower and more useful: after weeks of doing the same short sequence, it starts to happen without a decision. That is the real payoff, and it comes from doing it daily, not from doing it long.
Keep the short version ready. On a bad morning, doing 5 minutes keeps the habit alive, and that matters more than doing the full routine.
If you love a long workout or a slow breakfast, keep it, just do not make it the gate to your workday. Put the 10 minutes that start your work first, and enjoy the rest on days that allow it. The step-by-step version is in our morning routine checklist for adults.
Yes, if it includes the parts that matter: something physical like water and daylight, a short plan for the day, and the first step of your most important task.
About 10 to 20 minutes, done right before your chosen start time, ending with your first task started.
The order should be. Same steps in the same order means no decisions, which is what lets a routine become automatic.
